“To me, working well with any horse is rather like a dance. To make the dance spectacular, you must anticipate your horse’s every move and respond accordingly. Use patience and kindness and literally make your horse your partner. Learn to love the dance and the result will be pure magic.” Tena

Tena Bastian, Author and Clinician, is celebrating the recent release of her third book entitled The Foal is The Goal/Managing Your Mare and Handling A Stallion published by Trafalgar Square Publishing.  Known to many for her work as a Western Poet, Tena and her husband own and stand their own three time World Qualifying Palomino Stallion, This Beaus Eligible.  Their program is based in part on the teachings of Dr. Walter Threlfall of Ohio State University and Dr. Carla Carleton of Michigan State University.

In her first book, The Horses We’ve Known, Tena introduces the reader to a simple common sense approach to dealing with the challenges that your horse has to offer; an insight into better understanding our equine counterparts.  This book is based on her own personal training methods that she refers to as “The Dance”.  The theory of action and reaction and how every move you make will affect your horse’s overall personality in some way.  The Horses We’ve Known also addresses more difficult issues such as abuse and neglect, the killer pen controversy, the importance of getting things in writing and finding the grace to let them go.

The purpose of her latest book, The Foal Is The Goal is to take the technical aspect of breeding and simplify it in easy to understand terms.  To share practical experience on issues that range from communication, lifestyle, contracts, promotion and methods of breeding to mare care, pregnancy and foaling and everything in between.  From the book, Tena has created and is currently presenting various seminars that discuss these issues at length with first hand experience used as examples in creating a good working breeding program.  She has taken her basic understanding of horses shared in her first book to applying these principles when handling and breeding horses.  She has been a featured speaker at Equine Affaire, The North American Horse Spectacular and The South Dakota Horse Fair to name a few.  These seminars have been sponsored by some of the most respected names in the Equine industry.  She has also been a featured guest on two nationally syndicated radio programs, Pet Talk Radio and The Horse Show with Rick Lamb.

Tena has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Ohio Foundation Quarter Horse Association as well as the Midwest Foundation Quarter Horse Association.  She is best known for her project for the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association with a poem entitled “Iron Horse”.  Iron Horse was seen in many major magazines including Equus, Horse Illustrated and Horse and Rider magazines with the original piece auctioned at The All American Quarter Horse Congress to benefit NARHA.  She has also been involved with a project for the International Pro Rodeo Association entitled “Cowboy Up”.

What people are saying about Tena’s first book:

“...this is the best thing I have read in a long time. Her stories about her and her horses give me hope”

“...This book is fabulous and really digs deep into the heart of all of us who live and love horses.”

“...I love how she puts things in writing that so many people are afraid to write about.”

“...I’ve enjoyed Tena’s stories for years. This book is honest and open. Simple and direct. An entirely fresh perspective into how we see our horses.”

The Foal Is The Goal is sure to be another hit.  It has already received extremely favorable reviews from several magazines.  Published by the same horse professionals that have brought you many other respected clinicians, Tena is proud to share an introduction of this new book through her seminars.  She believes that through proper communication and education, breeding your horses should be an enjoyable experience.  Tena will also be available throughout each event at the Primedia / Horse And Rider Booth to answer questions on breeding and to sign copies of The Foal Is The Goal.  As a Presenter, Tena is original and refreshing with important information that is unlike any other seminar.  For more information on Tena and her seminars stop by the Primedia booth during the event or visit her web site at www.bearbackranch.com and also at her host web site, www.foalingaround.com

Tena's newest horse classic novel, The Horses We've Loved, The Lessons We've Learned has been sold to Wiley publishing and the book will be available everywhere this time next year.
